Finding Stillness

June 04, 2010 | by Reed Everingham

Being a Reiki practitioner, my day-to-day practice includes traditional Japanese breathing techniques and other forms of meditation.

I sometimes find the discipline of a daily practice challenging and am always grateful when new ways of maintaining this practice unfold.
In my home there are many animals including one cat and many fishes. My partner is a fish enthusiast and so keeps a number of aquariums exquisitely stocked for our viewing pleasure. The tanks are filled with an amazing variety of plant-life and Amazonian fish species. In my mind, the tanks themselves are more like aquatic gardens.

Please believe me – these fish are well cared for! I sometimes think their diet has more variety than mine… Lately I have begun to take time out to pay attention to the teeming life-force which is their world! It’s been a fantastic process and has become part of my daily practice. My ‘fish meditation’ allows me to be present and mindful of the world we (cat, fish & humans) inhabit.

Too often we get caught up in future thinking. We fill our minds with plans for the future and events that are beyond our immediate influence and control. This process of future thinking takes us away from the present and compromises our ability to engage and appreciate the magic in simple things.

Cultivating a daily meditation practice is a great way to manage mental health. It reduces anxiety and helps most people keep on top of stress. As a Reiki practitioner, it is an essential part of my day. It connects me with the divine and brings my awareness back to my spirituality. I really miss its grounding effect when I skip a day or forget to make it a priority.

Don’t wait for that perfect moment, find a spot, take a deep breath and marvel at the world that is!
